I have been busy reading a book called "The age of Kali" my first since coming back.
This book is by "William Darymple". The author is British by origin and a journalist
by occupation, he has spent lot of time researching India and its heritage. The book was a refreshing change as I could see my country through a different Len's.
Here's my review on it.
This book is far from flowing, rather a string of different experience clubbed over
years, but enticing. The Author has travelled the length and breadth of the country
and has deeply researched on Ancient Indian culture, the numerous invasions and there
influences on the country's social changes. The book presents a complete picture of how the country has transformed socially, economically and geographically from north to south and east to west.
It draws a ugly picture of erroded value system of modern India ...drawing comparisions from a rich, cultured civilisation that was to a morally erroded, orthodox country it has become now. Its hard to swallow and 'in your face' but thats the truth.
None of the thinking individuals can ignore the naked truth the book depicts. Since the book has no particular motive but to account the transformation of India over last 100 years its worth a read. It puts you in perspective, it brings you out from the false shell of prosperity in small pockets, and makes you realise how much more needs to be done here. how far we have come from the "Golden age" we once had.
The title is aptly defined as "The age of Kali"...Kalyug it is.
